Las Leñas Ski Resort : Season Highlights, Challenges, and What’s Next
Mendoza Province's top ski resort, Las Leñas, concluded the winter season with a combination of successes and setbacks. Here's a thorough look at how the season played out and what it means for next skiers and snowboarders, including record-breaking snowfalls and infrastructural challenges.
Record Snowfall and Opening Delays
In keeping with the resort's customary late-June opening, the season at Las Leñas officially began on June 28. However, an exceptionally mild autumn prevented early snowfall, delaying the start of the season. The opening of Sector 1 and the Eros 1 and Eros 2 lifts was made possible by the activation of artificial snowmaking systems as soon as the temperatures dropped, followed by natural snowfall. The resort was nevertheless able to provide guests with a number of slopes and activities in spite of the start time delay.
Freeride Competitions and International Recognition
When Las Leñas hosted the FA Las Leñas IFSA Qualifier from September 1–9, it attracted attention from all around the world. Top athletes competed for Freeride World Qualifier points at this event. Notable winners were Argentinean skier Manuela Roncallo in the women's division and Chilean skier Pablo Epple in the men's division. Argentina's Karina del Ciancio and Andorra's Albert Manresa secured the top snowboarding positions.
Unprecedented Snowfall in August
Las Leñas saw heavy snowfall in August; in a single day, the top received 30 inches (76 cm) of snow. The resort was completely changed by this intense snowfall, which provided excellent conditions for snowboarders and skiers. In addition to improving the skiing experience, the snowfall strengthened the resort's standing as a top powder-loving destination.
Infrastructure Challenges and Climate Concerns
Las Leñas has infrastructural issues despite its popularity. The ski lifts at the resort are particularly sluggish and undersized, with some of them being over 40 years old. A source of contention for guests looking for a more contemporary elevator experience has been this antiquated technology. Additionally, the resort's long-term survival is threatened by climate change. The stability of the ski season may be impacted by rising temperatures and erratic snowfall patterns, leading to requests for modernization and sustainability initiatives.
Looking Ahead 2026 Season Plans
Las Leñas is already getting preparations for the 2026 winter season as the 2025 season comes to an end. The resort usually opens in late June, though exact dates have not yet been disclosed. It is advised that guests keep abreast of official statements concerning lift operations, opening dates, and any other updates for the forthcoming season.
