Sidecountry Skiing in South America the best choice

Last season, South American ski resorts saw record-breaking snowstorms, paving the way for an even more amazing year. We've updated our skier's travel guide with insider information, local advice, and all the things you need to organize your ideal vacation as PowderQuest commemorates 26 years of skiing in South America. This is your go-to resource for South American skiing, covering everything from top resorts to undiscovered treasures.

Where to Ski in South America Chile vs. Argentina

Skiers traveling to South America can expect a mix of mega resorts and boutique escapes.

Chile: Legendary destinations like Portillo and Valle Nevado continue to attract skiers from around the globe. Further south, Chile’s Patagonia reveals more off-the-beaten-path options such as Antillanca, Osorno, and the new Pillan Ski Resort near Pucón.

Argentina: If you’re chasing iconic names, Las Leñas and Cerro Catedral deliver big terrain and lively ski towns. But don’t overlook smaller gems such as Chapelco and boutique Cerro Bayo, both offering a more intimate vibe and stunning scenery.

Whether you choose Chile or Argentina, you’ll find epic backdrops, passionate local ski culture, and terrain that caters to both resort riders and adventurous backcountry skiers.

When to Ski in South America

  • Timing is everything when planning your South America ski trip.

  • June: While mid to late June can bring surprise storms and fantastic conditions, it’s generally better to wait a little longer.

  • The greatest months for dependable powder days are July and August since they have the most snowfall. Keep in mind that local school holidays fall in early to mid-July; be prepared for more expensive rates, congested lift lines, and busier slopes.

  • September & October: By mid-September, snow quality shifts to a mix of winter powder and corn snow. Patagonia resorts like Bariloche have delivered exceptional late-season skiing in recent years, sometimes lasting well into October.

South American Ski Culture Later Starts, Longer Days

  • Disregard the early-morning tram queues that you may be accustomed to in North America. South American mornings are leisurely, and resort operations sometimes don't get going until the middle of the morning.

  • Lift Hours: Although most resorts open at 9:00 a.m., there may be unplanned delays in operations. On the good side, the lengthy daylight hours cause many lifts to operate late, sometimes until 5:30 p.m.

  • Vibe: Enjoying the environment and vibe while skiing here is just as important as finding new runs. Anticipate a relaxed yet enthusiastic ski culture.

Why Ski South America

Skiing South America provides a distinctive fusion of culture, landscape, and adventure, whether you're chasing snow in Bariloche's late season, discovering Patagonia's hidden treasures, or carving lengthy descents at Valle Nevado. A journey here guarantees lifelong memories with its spectacular snowfalls, lively après-ski, and opportunity to experience the ski season in the Southern Hemisphere.
