JAPOW

JAPOW  Chasing Japan’s Legendary Powder

The thick, completely dry powder snow that falls throughout Japan in January and February is referred to as JAPOW. Japan is a top destination for skiers and snowboarders from all over the globe because JAPOW, also known as Japowder, builds up into one of the most dependable and deepest snowpacks on Earth, from the jagged peaks of the Japanese Alps to the winter paradise of Hokkaido.

Discovering JAPOW

It was on the opposite side of the world, thousands of miles away, that I first heard the phrase "JAPOW." As I worked with photographer Mark Welsh on a Smith Optics team picture session in Chile, I was enthralled with his images and anecdotes from his several journeys to Japan. I was prepared to pursue the fabled JAPOW up close when I took my first trans-Pacific journey to Hokkaido five months later.

I've had the good fortune to work with some of the top professional skiers and snowboarders in the world throughout the years. They all share a passion for JAPOW and the unique cultural experience of Japan, despite their diverse origins and riding styles.

Why JAPOW is Special

  • Consistent Powder: Japan’s climate produces dry, fluffy snow that accumulates into deep, rideable layers perfect for both resort and backcountry skiing.
  • Steep and Varied Terrain: From tree-lined runs in Hokkaido to challenging alpine slopes in the Japanese Alps, JAPOW snow covers terrain for all levels of skiers and snowboarders.
  • Cultural Immersion: Beyond the slopes, Japan offers a rich cultural experience with local cuisine, onsens, and welcoming communities.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

January through February is the busiest JAPOW season, with the most consistent and heavy snowfall. While the Japanese Alps benefit from colder, drier snow at higher elevations, Hokkaido frequently receives snowstorms that result in thick powder days. To make the most of powder days, travelers should plan flexible routes, dress correctly for chilly alpine conditions, and keep an eye on local predictions.

Conclusion

JAPOW is a worldwide phenomenon that blends amazing powder, diverse terrain, and a unique cultural experience. It's more than simply snow. With top-notch skiing, stunning landscape, and a strong link to Japanese winter culture, pursuing JAPOW in Japan is a dream come true for skiers and snowboarders. JAPOW offers a unique ski experience, whether you're exploring the Japanese Alps or carving tree runs in Hokkaido.
