The Greatest South American Skiing: Your Comprehensive Mountains Ski Handbook

Last year, South American ski resorts had record-breaking snowstorms, and we're eager to see what the upcoming ski season has in store. We've updated our skier's travel guide with local guidance, professional insights, and crucial suggestions to help you organize the best South American ski vacation as PowderQuest embarks on its 26th year of Andean exploration.

This book covers the greatest South American ski destinations, how to choose between Chile and Argentina, when to go, and how to plan your perfect trip, whether your goals are endless powder, breathtaking mountain vistas, or an amazing ski adventure.

What Makes Ski South America Unique?

In addition to providing outstanding skiing experiences, South American ski resorts give an opportunity to escape the summers of the Northern Hemisphere and welcome the "Endless Winter." These resorts provide the ideal reverse-season retreat, operating from June to October, the winter and spring seasons in the Southern Hemisphere.

Anticipate globally recognized locations like Chile's Portillo and Valle Nevado, as well as Argentina's massive resorts, Cerro Catedral and Las Leñas. Chapelco, the tiny Cerro Bayo in Argentina, or Chile's recently opened Pillán Ski Resort near Pucón are options for those looking for something more sedate and off the usual route. For the Patagonian treasures of Osorno and Antillanca, head further south.

How Do You Choose Between Argentina and Chile?

Argentina and Chile each provide distinctive experiences. High-altitude slopes with breathtaking Andean views may be found in Chile's resorts, particularly those around Portillo and Valle Nevado. With its vast landscapes and excellent infrastructure, Argentina's Las Leñas and Cerro Catedral draw both domestic and foreign tourists.

The laid-back vibe and quaint local culture of Cerro Bayo and Pillán make them ideal for people seeking small, low-crowd resorts. Your decision ultimately comes down to whether you like calmer, smaller resorts with a genuine Latin American feel or high-altitude ski adventures.

Best Time to Visit

In South America, the best time to go skiing is from late July until mid-September. Conditions are often perfect during this timeframe, with adequate snow cover and slopes that are calmer than those in North America.

  • Early to mid-July coincides with local school holidays, so expect more crowded slopes and higher prices.
  • Weekends and local holidays may also bring higher visitor numbers.
  • Pre-season (May and early June) already saw major snowstorms delivering great early coverage.
  • By October, backcountry enthusiasts can still find outstanding powder. However, by November, it’s often wiser to save your money and plan for Japan or Canada the following season.

Season Dates and Updates

While certain places, like Antillanca in southern Chile, may stay open into November, the majority of South American ski resorts close between late September and mid-October. In 2020, Antillanca stayed open until November 29th.

As resorts publish their season schedules, be sure to bookmark this page and return frequently for the most recent opening dates and snow conditions.
