How to Ski Portillo, Chile This Summer

Portillo Ski Resort needs to be at the top of your 2025 travel list if you're searching for a ski vacation that blends iconic runs, breathtaking Andean scenery, and a strong ski legacy. Everything you need to know about skiing and snowboarding in Portillo, including where to stay and how to get there, is covered in this updated destination guide.

We'll help you get the greatest deals on your Portillo chile ski trip package, whether your preference is for the more affordable Inca Lodge or Octagon Lodge or the renowned Hotel Portillo. Additionally, you'll discover when to go, what to anticipate from the snow, and insider travel advice to ensure an effortless and enjoyable vacation.

How to Get to Portillo, Chile

Location:

Portillo lies 102 miles (164 km) from Santiago, nestled high in the craggy Andes near Cerro Aconcagua, just 3 miles (5 km) from the Argentine border. The closest town is Los Andes, 40 miles (63 km) to the west.

Travel Time:

Expect about a 2.5-hour drive from Santiago, following a modern highway and a dramatic series of switchbacks often shared with massive freight trucks bound for Argentina. Keep in mind: heavy snowstorms can temporarily close the road, so flexibility is key.

Private Vehicle Service:

Book your Portillo trip with PowderQuest, and we’ll arrange private shuttles with professional drivers from your Santiago hotel or the airport available for 3- to 7-night packages.

By Bus:

The budget option requires a little travel savvy (and ideally, some Spanish). There’s no direct bus to Portillo, you’ll need a ticket from Santiago to Mendoza (or the reverse) and coordinate  with the driver to drop you off on the highway in front of the resort. Recommended operators: Turbus, Andesmar, or Cata Internacional from Santiago’s main bus terminal or Mendoza.

Rental Car:

A rental can make sense if you’re planning to explore multiple ski areas or continue to Mendoza. But remember: your car will sit idle for several nights, fuel is costly, and you must carry snow chains at all times.

Helicopter Transfer:

The fastest and most scenic way to Portillo. Depart from Santiago airport or select city rooftop pads. Luggage is sent by vehicle. PowderQuest can arrange private heli transfers as part of your package.
