Las Leñas Ski Resort: Argentina’s Steep & Stunning Skiing Playground

Las Leñas isn’t just another ski resort, it’s a legend in the world of extreme skiing and snowboarding. Tucked deep in Argentina’s Mendoza Province, this high-altitude destination delivers an intoxicating mix of jaw-dropping terrain, epic powder days, and a unique ski culture that’s hard to match.

One of the crown jewels of Las Leñas is the Marte chairlift, an icon among skiers and snowboarders. This lift grants access to some of the most challenging and exhilarating terrain in South America: steep bowls, couloirs, and countless chutes with pitches ranging from 40 to over 50 degrees. From the bowl directly beneath the lift to the notorious Eduardo’s Couloir (a hair-raising 48° drop), it’s the kind of terrain that inspires lifelong devotion. Some even claim they’d trade every other chairlift in South America for Marte alone.

Where is Las Leñas?

Las Leñas is located in the Mendoza Province of Argentina. The closest town is Malargüe, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast, with roughly 27,000 residents. The nearest major city is Mendoza, 419 km (260 miles) to the northeast, and Buenos Aires, Argentina’s vibrant capital, is over 1,000 km (620 miles) to the east.

Terrain Overview: Something for Everyone (Almost)

Intermediate Skiing

Although Las Leñas is world-famous for its steep, big-mountain lines, intermediates will also find plenty to enjoy. Wide, well-pitched groomers make it a great choice for families with mixed abilities. Even from the Marte chair, long cruising runs reward skiers with spectacular views of the Las Leñas Valley. The ski and snowboard school features multilingual instructors, many with experience in Aspen, Vail, and Andorra ensuring quality lessons for all levels.

Beginners & Non-Skiers

The base area offers several Poma lifts and gentle, wide slopes perfect for first-timers. Group and private lessons are available for those ready to learn. For non-skiers, options include shopping in Pirámide, trying your luck at the local casino, or relaxing at the Piscis Hotel & Spa. That said, a full week here without skiing might feel a bit repetitive. If non-ski activities are a priority, Bariloche with its vibrant town and nearby ski resort offers a better mix.

Advanced & Expert Terrain

This is where Las Leñas truly earns its reputation. With more skiable terrain than Whistler, 14 lifts, and vast above-treeline landscapes, it’s a paradise for advanced and expert skiers. Add in snowcat-assisted skiing and straightforward access to backcountry touring and splitboarding, and you have one of the ultimate steep-skiing destinations in the Andes.

Why Las Leñas Stands Out

From endless steeps and legendary off-piste to breathtaking Andean vistas, Las Leñas delivers the kind of skiing and snowboarding experiences you can’t easily find elsewhere. Whether you’re chasing deep powder, long cruisers, or the thrill of technical descents, this Argentine gem belongs on every serious skier’s bucket list.
