Best Ski Resorts in Japan for Powder Chasers

Japan has more than 500 ski resorts, so it's no surprise that it's regarded as one of the best winter travel locations in the world. Even the USA, which is 26 times larger than Japan, cannot match the country's number of ski resorts, which is double what you'll discover when skiing in Canada.

The northern island of Hokkaido and the hilly prefectures of Nagano, Niigata, and Iwate on the main island of Honshu are home to the majority of Japan's top ski resorts for experienced and expert riders, while there are ski slopes close to Tokyo.

Here's where to start if you're thinking of taking a ski vacation in Japan.

Resorts of Hokkaido

Hokkaido is a mecca for powder lovers. The island is renowned for some of the driest, lightest, and most consistent snow on Earth. Many visitors head straight to Niseko, the most famous resort in Hokkaido, but there’s much more to discover.

If you prefer fewer crowds and more authentic Japanese culture, consider skipping Niseko altogether. Central Hokkaido offers incredible alternatives like the Furano backcountry where deep snow, wide-open terrain, and quiet slopes await.

Hakuba Ski Resorts

On Honshu, the Hakuba Valley is one of the most iconic ski destinations in Japan. Home to nine ski resorts, legendary backcountry zones, and a lively ski village, Hakuba offers a different vibe compared to Hokkaido.

Although there are frequent internet arguments contrasting Niseko with Hakuba, our opinion is straightforward: Hakuba backcountry skiing is difficult to surpass for experienced skiers and snowboarders. The lift-assisted backcountry touring is unmatched, the mountains are larger, and the tree runs are more evenly spaced.

Final Thoughts

The greatest ski resorts in Japan provide a distinctive fusion of amazing riding, breathtaking beauty, and rich culture, whether you opt for the big-mountain terrain of Hakuba or the deep, reliable powder of Hokkaido. Skiing in Japan is an amazing experience that will keep you coming back for more, no matter where you travel.
